A 12-Module Study Path for Revenue Cycle Teams

Revenue cycle learning is easier when a new concept connects to the work before and after it. A claim problem may begin with an access handoff; a payment variance may point back to documentation or contract interpretation. Study the sequence, then revisit the handoffs with practice cases.

Start with the patient and the record

Begin with patient access and the basic revenue cycle. Write down the inputs required before service, the owner of each step and what evidence moves forward. Next, study clinical documentation and coding as a separate handoff: who creates the record, who reviews it and when the account can proceed.

Follow the transaction

Move through hospital payment, physician and specialty billing, then claims and electronic data interchange. For each topic, ask what source record supports the transaction and what exception would stop it. Keep payer-specific decisions tied to current source material rather than memory.

Close the loop

Study payment and accounts receivable before denials and appeals. Trace one fictional case from charge to claim, remittance, follow-up and resolution. Then review compliance, leadership, contracting, costing, specialty operations and performance measures to see how operational choices appear in reports.

Use retrieval, not rereading alone

Answer a question before looking at its explanation. Mark uncertain topics in a progress tracker and return to them after a day. Try a practice case without the answer, then note the assumption or source you would check in live work. Educational examples are a starting point; current CMS, HHS, OIG, state, contract and payer rules control real cases.

The RCM Master Study Guide 2026 includes 148 explained questions across 12 modules, eight practice cases and an editable Excel question bank. It is general professional education, not certification or continuing education credit.
